About Dementia Hwb Swansea
Opened in January 2022, The Dementia Hwb in Swansea is a unique information centre located at the site of the former Thornton’s shop in The Quadrant in Swansea. Initially opening for a six week trial, the service is being supported by Dementia Friendly Swansea together with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, Age Cymru West Glamorgan and other local organisations. The trial was funded by the Swansea Council Winter of Wellbeing 50+ grant.
After the Pilot
There were 200+ visits in the 6 week pilot with good feedback from visitors, showing that the service was needed. To secure the future of the Hwb, further funding was needed. The Dementia Hwb is now supported by the West Glamorgan Regional Integrated Fund. Securing these funds have enabled the Hwb to reach more people, especially those who cannot get into the City Centre. In June 2022 Dementia Friendly Swansea registered as a charity – Charity Number 1199456.
If you are unable to get to the Hwb in Swansea, but still need support, call the Hwb between 11-3 and you will be able to access information. Call 01792 304519 to access. If you need to call outside of these hours, there is an answerphone service available. Please leave a message and someone will call you back as soon as the Hwb is open again.
The Safe Haven carer service is available to assist anyone with dementia who may become overwhelmed while in the City Centre and need a quiet space to collect themselves. The Safe Haven carers will also be company for a cared for person, while their carer is accessing information or support while at the Hwb.
As well as signposting to local services and organsations, the Hwb can help people complete Blue Badge applications, refer to the MAWW Fire Service for Free Self and Well visits, provide Herbert Protocol forms (used in the event of a loved one with dementia going missing) and more.
The Hwb aims to be open 7 days a week between 11:00am and 3pm. It is staffed by a mix of volunteers from Dementia Friendly Swansea plus individuals and professionals from local organisations who support those living with dementia and their loved ones.
